Ripple Directs $300K to Emergency Assistance

A $300,000 Ripple donation will support emergency food, water, and sanitation assistance after destructive flooding struck Nepal and Tibet. The blockchain payments company shared the contribution Aug. 28 on X, naming World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides meals during humanitarian emergencies, and Mercy Corps, an organization that delivers humanitarian aid and supports disaster recovery, as the recipients.

The company described the donation’s intended purpose during the unfolding humanitarian response:

“Ripple is donating $300,000 to World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps to support emergency meal distribution and water and sanitation efforts on the ground.”

Flooding has devastated communities along Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors. Critical infrastructure has been severely damaged. Mercy Corps is coordinating with local authorities and humanitarian partners to assess immediate needs and support the emergency response.

Floods Devastate Communities Across Nepal and Tibet

An ice-rock avalanche from a Himalayan glacier is believed to have blocked a river before releasing a destructive surge downstream. The flooding swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts, destroying homes, roads, bridges, power systems, and communications infrastructure, and struck the Gyirong border port in Tibet. Rescue operations continued amid unstable terrain and secondary-disaster risks.

At least 17,000 children were affected in Nepal, while 18 schools were destroyed and 20 sustained damage, UNICEF reported Aug. 27. The agency sought $17.2 million for health, nutrition, water, sanitation, education, child protection, and early-recovery programs.

Ripple’s donation targets two immediate needs identified across the affected areas. The company said World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps will use the funding for emergency meal distribution and water and sanitation efforts.

Donation Extends Ripple’s Humanitarian Partnerships

The contribution builds on Ripple’s existing relationships with both humanitarian organizations. World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps were among several nonprofits piloting Ripple Payments and stablecoin Ripple USD ($RLUSD) to examine faster and more transparent methods of distributing emergency funds.

Ripple previously worked with Mercy Corps Ventures on a drought-response project in Kenya. The $RLUSD-based pilot targeted 533 pastoralists and used satellite data and smart contracts to trigger payments when vegetation conditions fell below a predetermined threshold.

That initiative offered each eligible participant approximately $75 if drought conditions activated the payment mechanism. It demonstrated one way stablecoins and blockchain infrastructure could automate humanitarian assistance in areas with limited access to conventional financial services.

Ripple’s broader payment infrastructure is connected with the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain built for rapid, low-cost transactions. The Nepal and Tibet contribution follows the company’s earlier humanitarian partnerships while directing $300,000 toward organizations supporting emergency relief on the ground.
