Ethereum Validators Told to Disable Prysm Due to Outdated State Risk

0 1

Ethereum validator operators using the Prysm consensus client received an urgent alert on December 4. The Prysm team confirmed that some nodes were generating old states to process outdated attestations. Which can lead to incorrect validation behavior if left unchecked. To prevent this, Prysm told all operators to disable a specific function immediately by adding a single flag to their beacon node. The fix does not require a full client upgrade and does not affect validator clients.

🚨 We have identified the issue and have a quick workaround. All nodes should disable Prysm to unnecessarily generate old states to process outdated attestation. To do this, simply add the following flag to your beacon node. This flag works with v7.0.0 and you do not need to…

— Prysm Ethereum Client (@prylabs) December 4, 2025

The team instructed operators to add this line: –disable-last-epoch-targets. This flag works with Prysm v7.0.0, meaning most nodes can apply the fix in minutes. The warning triggered fast reactions across the validator community. This gives Prysm’s large footprint inside Ethereum’s consensus layer.

Prysm’s Market Share Makes This a Network-Level Event

Data from MigaLabs shows that Prysm controls close to 20% of Ethereum’s consensus client market share. This is making it the second-largest client after Lighthouse. That scale is what turned a client-side bug into a chain-wide concern. When a client with this kind of weight processes outdated state data. It does not just affect one validator. It can ripple into:

  • Missed attestations
  • Incorrect fork choice signals
  • Increased risk of penalties or slashing in edge cases

So far, there is no evidence of a live chain halt or finality failure tied to this issue. However, the concern is strictly about risk prevention, not damage control. Prysm acted before the situation escalated. In other words, this was a preemptive fire drill, not a post-incident cleanup.

What Exactly Went Wrong Inside Prysm

According to the Prysm team, affected nodes were producing unnecessary old states while trying to process outdated attestations from earlier epochs. That behavior increases CPU and memory strain and can distort how a node tracks chain progress under stress. This type of behavior is not new in Ethereum’s history. Similar state-handling issues have appeared during:

  • The May 2023 finality incident
  • Prior database index corruption bugs
  • Past memory spike problems across multiple clients

The key difference this time is speed. Prysm detected the issue early, published a one-step workaround. Also, avoided forcing thousands of validators into a rushed full upgrade cycle.

What Validators Should Do Right Now

If you run Prysm, the checklist is short and urgent:

  • Add the –disable-last-epoch-targets flag
  • Restart the beacon node
  • Verify logs for normal attestation flow
  • Monitor memory and CPU after restart

No validator key changes are required. No resync is required and no exit is required. For Ethereum as a whole, this episode reinforces a familiar truth: client diversity still matters. When one client holds near 20% of the network, even a manageable bug becomes a headline event. Still, this incident also shows Ethereum’s operational maturity. The issue was identified, disclosed, and mitigated within hours, not days. That is how a live, $400B+ settlement layer stays resilient. Currently, the chain remains stable. The only real deadline is for Prysm operators to act fast and flip the safety switch.
