Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is using AI agents to handle parts of his daily work, including coding, software testing and reviewing changes. In a November 7 update, he described how the tools take care of routine tasks while he makes the final decisions.
Armstrong assigns lead agents to different areas, while a central agent coordinates their work. The system gathers recommendations and pending reviews in one place, giving him a single queue to work through.
I’ve changed how I work over the last few weeks.
I now have one lead agent for each area of focus, running all the time, and a chief of staff agent that oversees them. Each lead manages its own sub-agents that write code, test it, chase reviews, and coordinate with team members.…

AI Agents Handle Coding and Review Tasks
Each lead agent is responsible for a group of smaller agents that handle coding, testing and pending reviews. Armstrong uses a local web application to view screenshots and video clips of the changes before deciding whether to approve them.

He can also use voice commands or keyboard shortcuts to go through several changes at a time. Despite the automation, he still requires human reviews and security checks before approving changes.
The agents also take Armstrong’s past decisions into account when suggesting what to do next. He refers to this setup as a “Brian brain,” which uses what it learns about his preferences to handle future tasks more closely to his expectations.
Coinbase Explores AI Agent Payment Infrastructure
The development comes as Coinbase explores digital currency payments between AI agents. In October, Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad highlighted research into automated payments without human involvement.
The internet’s business model was built around people: attention, ads, subscriptions and checkout. AI agents are changing that. They can retrieve and use content without sending a human reader back to the publisher.

The research identifies stablecoins as an option for frequent, low-cost transactions. It also examines Coinbase’s x402 protocol, which allows servers and AI agents to communicate payment requirements and process transactions.
Armstrong has separately suggested that stablecoins could become a standard payment method for AI agents. However, his latest update concerns his personal AI workflow rather than a company-wide rollout.
